WEEK 4 Researchs on current steering technology available

Hydraulic power steering:(HPS)
Everywhere. Widely used in older vehicles.

Electric Power Steering(EPS) or Electr-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS)

the basic designs of Electric assisted steering. the electric motor or pump replace the hydarulic pump which reduce the engine power loss and make the steering resistance adjustable.
Mini Copper: EHPS
Honda Accord Euro/ Turneo EPS
Toyota MR2 EPS
Etc.

Active steering:

A type of power electric variable gear ratio power steering technology introduced by BMW in 2003 first appearing on the redesigned 5-series which varies the degree that the wheels turn in response to the steering wheel. At lower speeds, this technology reduces the amount that the steering wheel must be turned -- improving performance in situations such as parking and other urban area traffic maneuvers. At higher speeds, the performance is such that the normal increased responsiveness from speed is avoided and it provides improved directional stability.

Drive by wire:(DBW)

has no steering column and completely controlled by wire. It eliminate the injury by steering column when crash.
The vibration and shock will not be transfered to the drive from steering column.
This is currently used in electric forklifts and stockpickers and some tractors [1]. Its implementation in road vehicles is limited by concerns over reliability although it has been demonstrated in several concept vehicles such as ThyssenKrupp Presta Steering's Mercedes-Benz Unimog, General Motors' Hy-wire and Sequel and the Mazda Ryuga. A rear wheel SbW system by Delphi called Quadrasteer is used on some pickup trucks but has had limited commercial success.

Automatic steering:
used mostly in farming and low speed operation vehicles. they use a gps and sensors to make the vehicle go thru a programmed path. the accuracy is low as the requirement for those agriculture vehicle is at a low level.

Speed Sensitive Steering
An outgrowth of power steering is speed sensitive steering, where the steering is heavily assisted at low speed and lightly assisted at high speed. The auto makers perceive that motorists might need to make large steering inputs while manoeuvering for parking, but not while traveling at high speed. The first vehicle with this feature was the Citroën SM with its Diravi layout[citation needed], although rather than altering the amount of assistance as in modern power steering systems, it altered the pressure on a centring cam which made the steering wheel try to "spring" back to the straight-ahead position. Modern speed-sensitive power steering systems reduce the mechanical or electrical assistance as the vehicle speed increases, giving a more direct feel. This feature is gradually becoming more common.

Four-wheel steering
Four-wheel steering (or all-wheel steering) is a system employed by some vehicles to improve steering response, increase vehicle stability while maneuvering at high speed, or to decrease turning radius at low speed.

It seems all the steering technology focus on the better drivability and comfortability for normal driving. None of them has considered to have the steering automatically while the slide of a car is fore seen. I dont think no one ever thought about it. Then why is there no progress or at least an idea available out there? There could be a specific reason. Robert, can you find out or at least do some research. I hope our idea is not denied by some simple answer.

WEEK 3. New Plan, ASS. Automatic Steering System

a bit sad that our previous project proposal was denied.
Mr Zeng is right. Sensors are widely used on automotive and now we try to design some thing using a big size and costy mechanical device to do the same thing as a small and cheap sensor?
Fine, we leave it.
However, i just got a new idea came to my mind this evening after i watch the famous TV show, TOP GEAR. The drivers in the program have very nice skills that they can drive a car so fast and even the car is losing control, they can save it. However, come back to real world, not every driver have skills what those top drivers have. In a case of losing control, some people will just lost his mind and doing nothing. And some people may turn the steering wheel subconsciously. To stop the car losing control completely, the steering action is vital. It has timing, angle and speed involved.
I had my own experience with my 03 Subaru Impreza in pukekohe race track. I was driving down the track at 120km/h before entering the straight line. That conner was bumpy and the car suddenly become unstable. I feel the rear of my car is so light and my rear tires starts to slide. My tail started to swing after my quickly contersteering and finally hit on the fence. My mate told me i may save the crash if i countersteer bit less. The initial slide is esier to be eliminated, but the heavy swing by oversteering afterwards was hard to control. However, that didnt help me with a $3000 collision repair.
Anyway, the automatic steering system (ASS) will have (not limited to) following features.
ASS will work with ABS, traction control and other driving aids to perform a safer driving.
ASS will take the control only when a certain lose of traction is detected.
ASS will not engage with steering wheel when act, so the driver will not be injuried. For example, hands or arms may trapped inside the steering wheel.
I had looked up on the internet and find that there are automatic steering systems designed and even producted. However, their design are mostly for farming, where heavy and low speed vehicles are used. GPS is involved to give the path, which means the vehicle is designed to operate by itself without manual control. ANd our concept is total different with theirs. We aim to give a vehicle helpful steering when it has a sign of losing control. Which means, the already invented ones are designed to save labour for people. And our planned ones are designed to reduce the chance or accident.
Also, heaps computer, steering, speed, centrol of gravity and other automotive principles applied. We will have heaps to work on. I m sure we can learn a lot from this project.

Automatic brake light and hazard light acturator

I m not sure 'actuator' is the right term to be used here, as least robert was laughing at it. I just wait for Robert to find me a better word to put.

The actuator, i rather say ' the device', aims to automatically turn on the brake lights and hazard lights on a vehicle when there is a crash or hit happen to the car.

The fact is, the rear brake light will not come on unless the drive put his foot down. However, when there is a crash, driver does not always response fast enough to step on the brake. In some circumstances, driver might be too nervous to put the hazard light after crash. This is dangerous. As without a proper signaling, the cars following behind may hit the car already crashed, and then, in the worst case, one more, one more, one more, one more, and more.........( They happens, i m sure.) This tends to be worse in a low visibility weather.

So, this project will create a device to automatically turn on the brake lights and hazard lights for you in the case of crash.

Task for both of us (week 1, 16 March-23 March):

Do some research on people died in multiple pile-up crashes. See if we can find some information about how and where crash happens and more useful bits and pieces.

Do some research on the latest crash prevention technology, signaling and others techniques that reduce the change of crash or multi pile-up crashes.

my little boat. SUNDAY FISHING

My group

My Project Partner:

Robert, Kenney ID: 1347004
Male
Age: 24-32 (dont know how to guess Kiwi's age, and never asked him, who cares..)

This guy is good, not that smart but working hard. LOL
We were working together on Semester 2 2010 and we did good. He was regretting that he was working with some lazy people on Project Management and Business Plan last year, which they almost failed. The truth is, you work with lazy people, you not only tired of doing the work yourself, but also tired of pushing people.

Summary:

Mr Kenney is not that kind of so-called smart guy, but definitely a hard studying student. He is a Kiwi, a native English speaking which will help me more or less on my English. He got all kinds of softwares (useful ones and useless ones including some virus i believe.) on his laptop. Thus, he is really helpful on the Project management, Gatt Chart. Also, he claimed he can create an animation for the project which i m having a doubt at the moment. Anyway, he is the project partner i love to deal with.

The group Leader, ME, I just assigned so.

Bo Liu
Male
Age: forgot

I dont either want to overestimate or underestimate myself. I love people mention that i work hard rather than saying i m smart. I believe that only people who work hard should be prized. No one is stupid.

I have been working in automotive industry for couple of years. I been working in Dinh's shop, SPEC II RACING DEVELOPMENT in East Tamaki for one year. And i run my own shop for two years and now running another shop having a partnership with a friend since last year. Compare to rest of the class, i think i should be in the top range. Apart from the practical experience, my maths is good too. I always got the answer fast and accurate, while rest of the class are still doing the calculation.

Also, i m a hard working people as well. I dont feel like to let the people count on me down. They join you because they trust you. The only way to satisfy people and let them keep trusting you is to keep the promise. Say so and Do so.

Last, I m also good at managing people to cooperate and fulfill the goal together. That's me and maybe, that is why robert loves to work with me again.

First post on my fresh Google Blog

I have been really confused about how to register and use this Google blog in past 2 hours. Forgive me!
Finally, Thanx GOD. i done it.

The purpose of this blog is all about my bachelor study in Unitec. In order to achieve and pass the course, Technology Project, every one in class got to have one of this to show the progress of the work. Tutor's idea is 'Since it is a non-taught course, people trends to disappear after first couple of weeks. However, we still need to monitor their action'

The course is about creating a innovative technology project to overcome the disadvantage of current design defects or improve the design to make it better. Obviously, it does not really target on making some thing.( will be good if some one can really bring up idea and design to get patent and some money) The main purpose of this course is to improve our ability to research, analysis and provide better ideas rather than existing ideas or designs.
